Experience a tale from the Old West. When Lee Thompson is making the long journey from Texas to Montana to see his aging father, he gets wind of the fact that the old man, one Sheriff Diehard Thompson, is losing control over Wolf River's town troublemakers. So, Lee decides to step in.Lee's choice is a tough one, as the rule of law and his father's reputation hang in the balance. Since Diehard hasn't seen Lee in fifteen year's, Lee's not entirely surprised when his father doesn't recognize him. Under the Diehard Brand L Ron Hubbard 9781459655829 Books

Even though I love the writing of L. Ron Hubbard (i.e. Battlefield Earth, To The Stars, Mission Earth) I must admit I didn’t expect much from this collection of short stories from the golden age of pulp fiction. I’ve never been so happy to be so wrong.

These stories are excellent, there are three contained herein: Under the Diehard Brand, Hoss Tamer, and The Ghost Town Gun-Ghost. All three were memorable and expertly written, not to mention authentic feeling and enjoyable as can be. The book itself is very high quality, they even went so far as to include the original cover art from the magazine it was first printed in (Western Aces) and a few black and white illustrations throughout. A first rate book, and a nice easy read suitable for summer, enjoy it!

This is one exciting western, but also a bit sad. Not just that the two main characters, father and son, are not close at all, but also that the father doesn't even recognize his own son when he comes back to town. It also shows you how easily people can take advantage of an older person.

After being in Texas for many years, Lee Thompson decides to make the journey back home to Montana to see his father, Sheriff Diehard Thompson. Seems the Sheriff is getting a little soft on the criminals, so the troublemakers decide to cause even more trouble for the town of Wolf River.

But when Lee arrives, his own father doesn't even know who he is. But that doesn't stop Lee from wanting to rid the town of the outlaws that have taken over, and continues to as word spreads of the soft Sheriff. As the number of murders and robberies are on the rise, Lee is hot on the trail of who he thinks is the actual cause of all of the towns problems.

I just love how intense this story got as it went on, and my son loved how tough Lee really was. You never know what you're going to get with the Golden Age Stories, but we are always delightfully surprised!

Also included with this story are Hoss Tamer and The Ghost Town Gun-Ghost. The first is about a circus trainer turned bronc buster that must hurry to try and stop the robbery of the Wells Fargo Train and the second is a lighter and fun story of a man on the run who stumbles across a town that is run by one man alone.
We've all seen those westerns with the lackadaisical Sheriff who hasn't pulled his pistol on anyone for years. Whether it be just from old age, health or fear the criminal element has the sixth sense and somehow the worst of the worst outlaws know it. They come in droves knowing full well that the town is there for the taking. Under the DieHard Brand is no exception. There is always one outlaw that stands out in the crowd and in this tale it would be Holy George. Holy, a beef cattle contractor by day is thought to be the one behind a string of murders among other illegal activities. The businessmen turn a blind eye as they love the money that is brought into the towns economy. Holy is reminiscent of a modern day mobster that hides behind legitimate businesses while in the shadows is corrupt as the sky is black ( remember, it's only the sun that makes us see the sky as blue). When the Sheriff of Wolf River begins to lose control that is when Lee Thompson steps in. Lee, the son of the Sheriff must defend the town and bring back order while he tries to keep his father's reputation intact.
Didn't know L. Ron was a pulp writer. I am a fan favorite of the pulps and old radio shows. This was just up my alley! Because I do NOT care care for audiobooks I was afraid this was that type of format! (Willie Nelson reading a Louie Lamour story leaves me unfazed) These books have multiple casts members and sound effects so I am tickled pink!
"Under the Diehard Brand" is a real gem that dates back to 1938 but is so well-written you'd think a modern writer had penned it yesterday. And therein lies the appeal of author L. Ron Hubbard's work - his writing is timeless. Punctuated by a breathless pace, memorable characters and constant action, "Under the Diehard Brand" is a textbook example of what a western should be.

The first chapter is a set-piece of mood, plotting and character development. Hubbard jumps right into the action as Lee Thompson returns home and rides into a cattle rustling (on a dark and stormy night, of course) and witnesses a murder. Initially at odds with his aging father, sheriff Diehard Thompson, Lee has plunged into a murderous situation where his mettle will be tested daily. It's in stories like these where we get to read marvelous descriptive lines like "The mutter of thunder growled across the sky." Or "He upset a bright brass spittoon which went bowling musically off on a voyage across the dusty floor." These seemingly inconsequential details add depth to the narrative and blend into Hubbard's mosaic of crusty cowpokes and blazing six-shooters.

"Under the Diehard Brand" has been reprinted as part of Hubbard's "Stories from the Golden Age" series by Galaxy Press who have excelled in producing first-rate editions. Inexpensively priced at $9.95 each, these beautiful books emulate the Pulp Era with retro cover illustrations and easy to read print. "Under the Diehard Brand" also includes two bonus stories - Hoss Tamer and The Ghost Town Gun-Ghost - which are equally entertaining.

Hubbard's westerns are especially popular and interested readers will seek out his air adventure, tales from the Orient, science fiction, mystery and sea adventure stories. Hubbard was a rare talent who mastered all of the genres that made the Pulp Era such an exciting time for readers hungry for fiction. Hubbard never let his readers down. These Galaxy Press editions are selling like hotcakes. So saddle up! Load your Winchester and take a ride into the Old West with a master storyteller!
